AGE: 91 • Wilmington
Alexander von der Luft passed away October 30, 2015 at the Stonegates Retirement Community.
He was born in 1923 in Wilmington, Delaware. Al attended Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and graduated from Princeton University as a member of the Class of 1945 with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project. He worked for the DuPont Company for 38 years serving in various locations including Gibbstown, NJ; Martinsburg, WV; Montreal, Quebec, CA; North Bay, Ontario, CA; Duluth, MN and Wilmington, DE. He retired in 1985 as the Director of the International Explosives Division.
Al served on the Kennett Consolidated School Board for fourteen years, two years as President. He was the Vice Chairman of Christiana Bank and Trust Company and a Director of Austin International, Inc. Al was a member of The Wilmington Club and The Pine Valley Golf Club.
Al was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Barbara, in 2011. He is survived by his brother Robert of Chadds Ford, PA and his four sons and their families: Eric of North Syracuse, NY, Geoffrey of Acworth, GA, Andrew of Brush Prairie, WA, and Christopher of Wilmington, DE.
There will be a reception at Stonegates in his honor on November 29, 2015 at 12:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brandywine Conservancy, P.O. Box 141, Chadds Ford, PA 19317.
